![]() ![]() One can experience some of their ceremonies and dances by attending Pow Wows and Indian Fairs, but those are public exhibitions. They have modern houses for the most part, go to school, and work. Native American people live very much the same lives as the rest of us do. They do not make themselves or their homes accessible to visitors. Native American people are very private about their lives and themselves, just as anyone else is. The Hopi are descendants of the original inhabitants of the area. The most popular locations to visit in the Navajo lands are Canyon de Chelly and Chinle, however the cliff dwelling ruins one can view there are from ancestors of prehistoric Pueblo people not the Navajo who came later. ![]() There are several museums on Navajo land in various locations. The Hopi have a cultural center at Second Mesa which is about 3 hours northeast of Sedona. It is possible to visit the tribal lands of the Hopi and Navajo people. In Phoenix, 2 hours south of Sedona, is the Heard Museum which has world class exhibits of the same. In Flagstaff, less than an hour from Sedona, is the Museum of Northern Arizona which has very good exhibits of Native American art, culture and history. There are several ways to learn about Native cultures in the Southwest. Sedona is not the home of any Native American tribes or a center of their culture.
